Gender, competition, and performance: Evidence from chess players

This paper studies gender differences in performance a male?dominated competitive environment chess tournaments. We find that the composition of games affects behaviors both men and women ways worsen outcomes for women. Using unique measure within?game quality play, we show make more mistakes when playing against men.
